As we were creating the labels for our library and our art room, the kids started playing with balloons. They loved to blow them up and release them. So, recognizing a teachable moment, we went to the gym and had balloon races. The kids quickly saw they didn't have any control of which way their balloon traveled. This brought us back in the classroom to set up a balloon racing track to truly race the balloons. Throughout the week we tested the size, shape and angle of the balloons. We discussed friction, motion and Newton's Third Law of Motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We read books "The Big Balloon Race", "Curious George goes Up Up Up" and "Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon". "The Big Balloon Race" is a historical fiction book so we were able to learn about Carlotta Myers, a fearless female aeronaut of the late 1800's.
