What a wonderful week in The World of Gardening! This week we learned all about plants: the parts of the plant, what they need to survive, and what they produce. We tried lots of vegetables tips this week, including root vegetables, stem vegetables, leafy vegetables, bulb vegetables and fruit vegetables! It was a tie for our favorite, between the stem (rhubarb) and fruit (sweet corn). After learning the parts of the flower, we each picked our favorite flower and created a three dimensional garden. Out garden consisted of a rose, poppy, tulip, tiger lily and a pansy. We ended the week with a field trip to Iowa City Landscaping to pick out annuals for our painted flower pots!

All week long we've been reading, discussing, comparing, and contrasting Fairy Tales. We've compiled a list of common Fairy Tale elements (types of characters, settings, magical elements, language problems, etc.) and titles. We've also collected the groups knowledge and questions about forests, and had a great morning exploring the woods near the Lawler's home. Highlights there included building frog houses, throwing pebbles into the pond, seeing blue gill and their nests, doing a forest meditation, wearing willow wreathes, and hiking the trails. We've been working on our Fairy Houses all week and are finishing up the last two tomorrow. This included painting, collecting items, and gluing them, in turn, to our structures. The kids also had the opportunity make clothespin fairy dolls and have fun doing some imaginative play with them. Other highlights this week include lunch under the tree, drawing forest creatures, playing in the gym, math games with cards and dice, and mushroom hunting. A special thanks to Emily, our other teacher for the week, who the kids enjoy so much, and who helped the week to so smoothly!
