We have caterpillars! During circle time this week, Paula introduced an aerial map of the school. She had Kari and me hide and the kids had to use the map to find us. Turns out Kari shared a hiding place with caterpillars so we brought a couple indoors in hopes that we can witness their transformation into butterflies.
We also examined an aerial map of the classroom. I had the kids work together to find hidden objects by using the map. My older students really grasped this concept and my younger students enjoyed the hunt!
It is almost time to plant a few more things for fall in Prairie Green’s garden. We have been learning about the parts of the plant. One student brought in a very special baby Pin Oak tree – it was planted by a squirrel! Her grandma dug it up and gave it to Prairie Green. We went out yesterday to plant it in the school yard and discovered how much work gardening can be. We weeded and broke up the soil but we’ll be planting the little tree next week.
In art, we started to make flowers to put up in our classroom. They are looking great! During snack time, we talked about what part of the plant we were eating. I’d like to do some sprouting next week. Please send your child with a few dry beans and we will sprout them. Hopefully, we will have a variety of beans.
Monday/Wednesday students are writing a “Robot Song”, inspired by one student's love of robots. I am hoping we do more songwriting throughout the year! All my students seem to enjoy music and we’ve been singing and using simple rhythm instruments during morning and afternoon circle time.
Have a wonderful weekend!
