started off on Monday by going to the Devonian Fossil Gorge which was
really fun. There was more water than there was early this summer so
the kids were looking in the pools for tadpoles, frogs, and fish. We
also went all around the gorge looking for fossils to examine so we
could make some the next day. Parker, Tai & Will had fun finding the
numbers and then finding the fossil attached to that number. On
Tuesday we made salt dough and then made fossil using dinosaurs and
items we found outside. Parker used a dinosaur and a perfectly shaped
leaf he found. Waelyn used a Tai found a piece of bark for his first
fossil and used a dinosaur for his second. Will decided to use a
dinosaur and a rock for his two fossils. After we made them, I took
them home so I could bake them(it took several hours because they were
so thick). We decided to find out more info on fossils so we went to
the library after our project. The librarian helped us find the fossil
section and the kids had fun picking out books and looking at all the
different types of fossils. We were also lucky to find a video on the
Devonian Fossil Gorge that showed us how it was formed and discovered.
On Wednesday we watched that video and then painted our fossils. We
also decided that since it was such a beautiful afternoon the kids
wanted to play spider ball and they all decided to gang up on me :)
Thursday was a bit of a cloudy/rainy day so we stayed in. Parker
decided this should be the day to start teaching me chess--boy was I
confused about some things but Parker was a great teacher and I'm
still learning(slowly but surely!!) Tai, Will, and Waelyn played
bookstore while we played chess and then we went to do our project. We
made tissue paper sun catchers. They worked on their fine motor skills
by cutting up tissue paper into different shapes and sizes and then
created the shape they wanted to use, ie squares, hearts, circles. The
finished project went home in their backpacks on Friday and if you ask
them to hold it up to a window you will see how it almost looks like
stained glass!! They really enjoyed doing this.
The week ended with a fun trip to Wilson's Apple Orchard. Lucy joined
Parker, Tai & Will and they decided the first stop was the pumpkin
patches. They ran around looking for the biggest pumpkin(we found that
in patch #2) and the smallest pumpkin(patch #1). After all that
running around the kids were hungry so we went into the store and they
all decided to buy a Honey Crisp Apple and they loved it!! They tried
a sample of it and declared it to be the best tasting, which I agree
with :) Next week is the start of Fall so we are going to do some fun
Fall activities. Hope everyone has a great weekend and see you Monday!
