The students also started to show some interest with poetry. On Friday during lunch, we started signing to a tune of five syllables and made up verses about ourselves. From this Claire took her interest in the Wizard of Oz and made a poem about Dorothy. Next week we will look at a few different types of poetry and the students will be able to create a few different kinds.
It was a beautiful week this week so we spent time outdoors. A big section of the maple tree is down so the kids had a good time playing and hiding in and around the tree. We took four sections of another fallen tree from the neighbors house to use as stools in our sunflower house. It was a difficult task to roll those large pieces up the big hills but teamwork helped! Plus I think we saved A LOT of money...http://www.arborday.org/explore/sourcebook/MerchDetail.cfm?ID=2

As we were creating the labels for our library and our art room, the kids started playing with balloons. They loved to blow them up and release them. So, recognizing a teachable moment, we went to the gym and had balloon races. The kids quickly saw they didn't have any control of which way their balloon traveled. This brought us back in the classroom to set up a balloon racing track to truly race the balloons. Throughout the week we tested the size, shape and angle of the balloons. We discussed friction, motion and Newton's Third Law of Motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We read books "The Big Balloon Race", "Curious George goes Up Up Up" and "Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon". "The Big Balloon Race" is a historical fiction book so we were able to learn about Carlotta Myers, a fearless female aeronaut of the late 1800's. Today we went to Kent Park in the afternoon with the MPHSAP (Mid Prairie Home Schooling Assistance Program). Brad Friedhof met with us for the first hour in the education room. He brought out a salamander, a turtle and snake. Some students even put the snake around their neck! The second hour we went on a scavenger hunt. Three of our students have open enrolled in Mid Prairie School District due to the amazing opportunities we are able to provide our kids. Keep posted for more fun events! Welcome back to school! Families of Prairie Green School enjoyed a three week break since we went to the year round school schedule this July. Each student was asked to prepare a project related to something that was done over break! BJ presented a list of his favorite rides at Disney World. He categorized them into different groups including Adventure Rides, Roller Coasters, Water Rides and Shows.
